What is the main difference between a Transport Chair and a Standard Wheelchair?

Wheelchairs can be self-propelled by the user and also pushed by the companion. The large 24” rear wheels with rims on a standard wheelchair allow the user to self-propel. This feature does add more weight and bulk to the wheelchair. Transport chairs on the other hand, have smaller rear wheels so the user cannot self-propel and can only be pushed by the companion. The transport chair is both lighter and more compact than a standard wheelchair.

Is Renting a Transport Wheelchair a Good Idea?

Transport chairs are not self-propelled, which means they can’t be pushed by the person sitting in the chair.  The reason is that the four wheels on a transport chair are all small and because of that cannot be reached to propel, by the person sitting in the chair, therefore someone has to push the person sitting in the chair.

Renting a transport wheelchair is a good idea for someone who does not have the strength to propel themselves with a standard wheelchair and perhaps more importantly someone that can push them in the chair.   A transport chair is a durable piece of equipment and is generally lighter than a standard wheelchair. This makes it easier to fold up and put into a vehicle, while being durable enough to accommodate someone up 300 pounds.

A transport chair, with its light design and good turning radius make it easy to maneuver inside the house or outside on flat smooth surfaces.  This type of wheelchair is great for enjoying mobility at social gatherings, taking shopping trips or getting to appointments.

Renting a transport chair is recommended when the need is temporary.  Generally, it is less expensive to rent a transport chair for a few weeks or a couple months.
